RON Posted 18/01/2010 09:21:31

we are taking April of reserve as this home was not the right one for her, this baby will need a quiet home as she has taken a beating and so is very nervous she goes down on her bely when you raise your hand or try to touch her, Christen is going to work with here in Ireland and try to help her get over this

Hi Pammy

Not sure if you remember me but I adopted the lovely ELLA (Bronte) a few weeks ago.

Well this poor little girl caught my eye and as we live in a very quiet house with no children, 2 elderly cats and a very large garden and plenty of LOVE, I was wondering about offering our home for fostering her. What does it entail?. Sophie x

Pammy Posted 21/01/2010 18:09:38

Hi Sophie ,

Thats very kind of you , you would need to speak to Ron ,
Im sure we will want a foster home for her when shes ready to travel .
If you want to talk to me about fostering let me know .
She will need some special care thats for sure

Pam

April arrived to snow. She is safe and well. Updates and photos to follow later. Sophie

Sophie Posted 12/02/2010 12:38:21

Well April is here.

Although we walked her around Ockham Common and again in the garden at home in driving snow , she didn't seem to want to do her business. 10 mins later both a poo & wee ended up on our living room carpet - you have to laugh.

Ella greeted April with a wagging tail, sussed each other out & seemed to like each other immediately and have already had a couple of play fights. She has had plently to drink & ate a good breakfast including a treat of two sausages

She has since been out twice and been shown every inch of the garden - pulls a bit on the lead so will need some work. She has bad recall, doesn't appear to know her name or any commands, not even "sit", so will work on that too.

She has just had a wash and blowdry and seemed to like all the attention and now has settled (she has loads of energy) so have finally been able to take some pictures which I will post shortly.

Sophie

Forgot to say that she is very skinny, can see all of her spine and ribs so we will feed her more food until she improves.

Also she is very nervous without Ella around her in the house. When Martin took Ella out for her ball/frisbee play, April backed away from me and would not even come near me for a treat. As soon as Ella came back, her she changed totally relaxed again.

Sophie Posted 15/02/2010 09:04:38

Well April seems to have got into a routine now and settled more.
She has learnt the "sit" command and is getting there with "down". She is eating high protein dry food three times a day and I can honestly see the difference already - will be lovely when she puts on more weight.

She barks madly at any visitors or loud noices which I am sure is due to her nervousness but settled down when my Mum visited after a few minutes.

Pammy Posted 15/02/2010 18:11:04

Thanks for the update , glad shes coming along , have you weighed her ?

Sophie Posted 16/02/2010 12:59:15

Yes, not easy to weight unless we hold her in our arms and stand on the scales with her, which is fine at the moment as she is light and nice and still in our arms.

She was 19.8 kilograms when she arrived and we just weighed her now & she is 22.7 kilograms

Pammy Posted 16/02/2010 17:04:33

Thanks Sophie , it just gives you an idea , so youve got something to work on . Looks like shes heading in the right direction ..

Well April is settling in well now. She loves playing in puddles and gets absolutely soaked and covered in mud. She plays outside with Ella well and they chase each other. Her recall is getting better although she does not respond to her name at all but "come" works on most occasions.

She is still very nervous of any strangers (including children) and barks and jumps up madly if the doorbell rings or a car comes up the drive or if we have visitors. She is a barker.

She plays nicely with Ella indoors now with bits of rags which they try to get off each other. Ella usually wins as she is stronger and can almost pull poor April along the floor with the rag in her mouth.

She really is a stunning girl with lovely markings. Will put some pictures up

Pammy Posted 05/03/2010 12:24:59

I guess theres going to be a few tears , if she goes !!
It doesn't get any easier Sophie ... the longer they are with you the harder it is !!!

Good Luck Holly

Sophie Posted 05/03/2010 13:39:59

Lots of tears but we want what is best for her in the end.

We are working on her barking at home which is due to fear so we have been advised and so visitors now have treats to give her which seems to be working well - she needs to know it is a good experience when visitors come. Apart from still being afraid of visitors in the home & garden and still being a bit underweight, she is a perfect little girl and very pretty.

Sophie Posted 06/03/2010 15:24:39

Well Holly has gone to her new forever home. They are a lovely couple 20 mins drive from us who already have an 8 yr old GSD male.

Letting this baby go is one of the hardest things we have ever had to do in our life. There have been tears from both of us and Ella is missing her to.

Good luck little baby.

Pammy Posted 06/03/2010 16:50:33

Pammy Posted 06/03/2010 19:28:43

Received from Hollys new Mum , just for Sophie

Just to let you all know that Holly has been an absolute gem so far. Richard collected her from Martin and Sophie and I took Diesel to the local park. Richard came to the park with Holly and we walked them together for about half an hour before bringing them both home together. Diesel hasn't questioned why Holly is here and Holly hasn't stopped playing since she arrived, except when they had their dinners, together in the kitchen with no problems, and they both ate well. Holly is a real live wire and hasn't stopped since the minute she arrived. Diesel hasn't been this active in ages. They should both sleep well tonight. I know it is early days yet, but we are off to a great beginning and we will be keeping in touch with Martin and Sophie and hopefully meeting up for some lovely walks as we live very close to each other. Might have to re-christen her Turbo as she is so lively...then we will have Turbo Diesel! Only joking. She so reminds me of a younger Diesel, they are so very similar in colouring. Thank you for Holly, she will be treasured for ever.

Sophie Posted 07/03/2010 09:25:10

Thank you so much for the update. We were thinking about Holly or Turbo constantly last night, so really nice to know she is loving her new home. She is a little live wire - always on the go and has kept Ella fit.

Appreciate the updates.

Sophie Posted 30/04/2010 11:20:41

An update on Holly. Well she was adopted but unfortunately the resident male GSD was very jealous and bit his owner, so Holly came back to us.

She is such a sweet dog and had such a hard time (apart from the fact that Martin had fallen in love with her) we finally adopted her, although we had only just a few months before adopted a perfect 2yr old GSD from Sussex who we named Ella.

Holly is extremely active and a little live wire who needed strong boundaries as still quite young, so we sent her on a 3 week residential training course at a fantastic place in Surrey called Royvon (www.royvon.co.uk). She excelled in training and even walks to heel unleaded now - unbelievable progress. She still thinks she needs to protect her home and garden but we are working on this and she is making progress - with the help of home visits at no charge from Royvon Training.

We are now enjoying our two gorgeous girls and just want to say thanks to Ron and everyone at Sussex for their help and support.

We hope to be able to foster again in the near future but will not be falling in love with any more of the dogs. Promise. xx
