Hopefully going to meet Ben next week, following a yet to be organised home visit. Have to ring her again to confirm a time and a date as passed on my details onto her so she can also get a reference from my veterinarian. So crossing my fingers that it'll go well

Think that Ben will love my two girls (I know that they get very flirty anytime they meet a male lol!) and enjoy a life of hikes in the Dartry mountain range, along Lissadell beach and trips to both Kerry and Donegal for forest hikes and having two large gardens to explore, empty fields to run through and most importantly, to become acquainted with the local post delivery person.... very important that as he will be the new kid on the block!!! Razz

really looking forward to meeting him and letting him get to know me.

Yeah, Ben made it to Sunny County Sligo late this evening (well yesterday as it's past midnight now as i write this). Travelled very well, but got sick once due to the County Fermanagh to Counties Cavan and Leitrim twisty road network.

Apart from that, the boy is due for a walk on the beach in the morning as he is need of a splash in the sea to "Freshen" himself up! lol!

He was, naturally; unsure of me when I drove away from meeting Fiona today (Totally sound lady). However, after talking to him non-stop in a calm collective manner he became very friendly and licked my ear a few times while driving. He even met my german girlfriend so he took to her like a duck to water....though he was one smelly doggy but i had the "ocean breeze" dog perfume from the pet shop handy to "lighten" the Aroma

Walked him around 5 times (toilet duties) on the way home and even found that though he shows a total dislike for anyone trying to place a lead on him (he'll get used to it) he was very obedient (often lying down when heeling - and turning onto his back in a subservient way).

Yet, once walking again, he seems to jump a total of 2 times in what could be construed as a happy reaction, and develops a nice happy deposition.

So, over all feeling about Ben? He's calm, reserved yet spritely and well mannered and will begin to show a good demenour as time passes. I like this dog.

Update from Ireland:

Bless his cotton socks poor ben had to have a shave. He had too much matted undercoat so out came the "Shearers" and off came his coat. Though he looks scrawny now, he is defleaed, washed and conditioned with the vet removing the 4 cysts on his head and neck.

He is now settled in with the other two dogs and enjoys, walks on the beach and a happy life style that every dog should become accustomed to

PostSubject: Ben .. a year and bit later   Mon Sep 05, 2011 9:47 am

hi guys.

not been on the forum for a while. sorry about that!

lot has happened since i picked up ben back in march 2010.

over all, he's been a gem to have as a pet. very good manners though he never quite got rid of his subservient nature and fear of leads... so much so that he's happier to walk beside me without one and is very calm and collected around other dogs.

oh he's also got a foster son to look after now (Jake) who is 9 months old and in a bit of bother with his hips so Ben is actually taking care of him - keeping him calm and nipping him when he gets too boisterous... almost like he knows that Jake needs to stop attempting to jump.

Jake, is the grandson of my own GSD Zara whose daughter Gabi I passed on to another family back in 2009. unfortunately they bred gabi with a male GSD with hip issues but never mentioned this at the time I collected Jake from them...at the time they wanted to sell, but the market was gone so I took him instead.

He's got double hip (jake) dysplasia but it is operable and he will be undergoing the proceedures when he reaches 12 - 14 months based on another set of scans to confirm that he'll be ready then. He's happy as it is and it was only realised two weeks ago as he was suffering gastric issues and the vet took an x-ray to ensure he hadn't swallowed something that was causing him issues in his gut and it was then that the vet saw the issue with his hips.

Still, with Ben to continue looking after him, and then having his aunt and grandmother to take care of him, i reckon jake is in good hands. Smile

will post photos up later.

PostSubject: Ben - a sad update   Tue Mar 06, 2012 10:15 am

Hi All

It's with great and profound sadness that I post this today. Ben went to sleep in the Vets surgery 2 weeks ago. After a good time enjoying his new home for the last 2yrs almost, he developed stomach cancer which, by the time it was diagnosed had spread and was affecting his health. It meant the agonising decision of having to put him to sleep which was heart breaking as he was the sweetest male GSD anyone could have called "friend".

What is just as bad was the loss of my 4th shepherd, Jake, grandson to my Shepherd Zara, and was also a white male GsD the age of 11months back on the 18 october 11 due to severe onset dual hip dysplasia which as any owner of a GSD can testify is traumatic for both dog and owner.
Jake was the offspring of Zara's daughter; Gaby; whose owners stupidly bred with a male GSD that had bad hip scoring which ultimately got passed to Jake.

So all in all, not a great past few months. Still I've got Zara and Vikki (both GSD) so all is not lost but never easy to forget the boys.

RI Jake & Ben

Hi Vic

I really appreciate the sentiment. I had both cremated at their allotted time so they are still with me in many ways. But by God how I miss them.

Thanks Bren
