PostSubject: Lucas's Story - Never Give Up Hope   Fri Jun 18, 2010 7:10 am

From Cottage Rescue in Ireland

I got a call about this poor German Shepherd 27/05/2009 from a lady near Cashel, she had found this dog in her shed when she got home from work and I collected him at 7pm.

He is a young dog and is very emaciated and has dreadful mange, very weak, dehydrated and hardly able to walk.

Just look at his poor face and try to imagine how sore and itchy he must be.

The pain and suffering of this animal could have been prevented if his owner had obtained a simple mange treatment from a vet.

There is no need what-so-ever for this kind of neglect/cruelty

No excuse for his suffering…..

Speaking with Hannah over the week end..........she is calling this lad Lucas.....when she got him he was totally
dehydrated and Lucozade is a brill remedy for quick re-hydration.......poured over food.........
so she's named him Lucas

Here is Lucas to-day............and he is looking much brighter.........still very swollen
but there is a definate improvement since he's been on his meds (Ivomec/ anti inflamms/Cortisone etc.)

Update from Hannah :-

Well he is much brighter today but is giving a lot of his time in the timber kennel under the shade of the trees where is nice and cool on him as you can imagine the heat would drive him crazy.

The swelling has gone down on his face and his eyes are much brighter and more alert and he is now showing signs of hearing now - the medication is working on his ears anyway as they must have been swollen because the vet could find nothing wrong with them either and they were totally clean but his poor legs are still very big so maybe in the next few days they will come down as well.

But all in all he well on the road to recovery and he loves his grub and has great table manners and he seems to have a very kind soul and now when he sees me he comes up to the gate to say hello where is my grub please????

His past is now behind him and he looks forward to the future

He stayed with Hannah at Cottage Rescue for nearty 2 months, before he travelled to the Uk .
This is him in July .

Hannah your an angel , Lucas will be forever grateful .
He came to me to foster , but within a few days I knew I was going to keep him .
Sheba & Rocky love him.

Lucas has been here a few days & settled in well . Hes Rockys shadow , loves him to bits
Im taking him to the vets tomorrow as his paws are causing him discomfort , dont know if its from the mange or something new ..
Hes been a liitle star , except when I took Sheba & Rocky for a walk without him , while I was out he chewed my hall flooring , naughty boy hes not to know .. so Auntie Clare bought him lots of toys round last night ..

Just a few pictures of him looking a happy lad

Hes making himself at home

Met Sheba & Rocky , with lots of kisses , I hope he will learn from them

This boy is gorgeous

Unbelievable difference from the first pic we saw of him!

Well done to all involved in helping this lad, your amazing!
Just shows what can be achieved with just a bit of love and care.

Pam, well done for getting up so early to fetch this lad, no doubt with a super foster mummy like you he will come on even further with leaps & bounds

Look forward to meeting you tomorrow Lucas, cant wait to give you a big munch & cuddle

Clare

It was lovely speaking to you a couple of times on th ephone Pam and I am so happy that he is settled in so well and he looks so happy in all the pics and thank you so much for giving him this time and love with you.

And as Ron said big thanks are due to a lot of people both here, the Uk and Ireland for sending support and donations.

There was money left out of the donation money that was sent to me from very kind people and I used it to pay towards Sheeba's operation for her eyes, so the money was well spent.

So thank you to all...

Oh I was so delighted when pam rang me to say that she had totally fallen in love with this dog and that she was keeping him.

Thank you Pam for giving him a forever home and thank you to Ron for making that possible and Thank you to all that helped with funding for him and I wonder should we thank the bad owner for dumping him so that he could discover a wonderful life.

Thank you all

August 09

Lucas has been here 6 weeks tomorrow .. His paws got better , then got poorly again ... :GSD:

Hes had a bath and has regular dips in Aludex and is still on antibiotics ..
Ive only been walking him short distances ... when its dry.
Hes a very shy & timid boy on his own , but when hes with Rocky hes full of it ..

My nephew wanted to take us all out today , so weve been to the Malvern Hills

Lucas enjoying the view

Over the last 4 months Lucas has lost lots of hair again & his mange has returned ...
The vet has just started a new treatment so im hoping its going to work .
Hes got a great life here with us & plays with Rocky non stop , but hes not enjoying it as much as he should be , only has short walks because his paws become sore .
Will update on his progress

Well all the snow has gone now & the fields are lovely & wet ..

Ive been doing lots of 1 to 1 with Lucas , using the long line , hes getting use to the big wide world out there .
He loves people but not all dogs . His paws are so much better , he can walk withput laying down .

Hes had his 9th injection today & all went well thank god.
The vet was really pleased him , so maybe another one or 2 injections and he will be 100%

Oh Pam, they're all gorgeous. You and everyone associated with rescuing these treasures really are angels. Poor little Lucas has had some bad luck but hopefully he's on the mend now. He certainly looks a happy little fella. Good for you.
