Monty runs so fast and doesnt put on the brakes til the last minute, this is resulting in the pad halfway up his leg getting sore and sometimes results in bleeding.
We have been putting vaseline on it , but obviously when he is out running it all flares again ...
Any suggestions welcome

I cannot think of any suggestions, someone with more knowledge might come along with one. (but have giggled imaging Monty coming skidding to a halt)

Lucas had very sore pads , The vet advised 1 PINT warm WATER , 1 TABLESPOON EPSOM SALTS , ONCE daily ...
Worth a try , made such a difference ..Try for a couple of days see if helps , if not contact the vet .
Keep us posted

Have you tried that scretch bandage...just to protect pad when hes out
Silly question is he running on his own when he does this or are you throwing something for him

Pammie sounds good...

Yes it is when we throw his ball for him.
Have tried the bandage but it just falls off.

What the scretch bandage the coloured ones that they use at the vets... cheaper to buy at horse shops though ..shouldnt fall of coz it sticks to the fur
I dont throw balls or toys for my dogs coz of ripped pads

Its called vetwrap, it sticks to itself so wont come off but you have to be careful how tight you put it on, dont overstretch it or you could cut of circulation to the paw!
I would say its the best solution to your problem if your dog scrapes his pads when he plays ball.
The other alternative would be boots which you can get from http://www.dogbootsactive.com I used these for Bandit when he needed them & they are great, dont fall off either.

A friend of mine used Friars Balsam on the paws of his Police dog, which dries quite hard and also smells yak so they won't lick it. If there are no breaks in the pads you could try surgical spirit to harden them up, vaseline will only soften them.
Just another thought, use the vetwrap and make sure you go far enough up the leg that it won't slide down, then add some gaffer tape strips to strengthen the pad area so he won't wear them out. Electrical tape is brilliant for holding the end of the vetwrap so it doesnt unwind and it comes off easily so you can always reuse it.

Thanks for all the feedback all.
Will defo try the Friars Balsam.
Have ordered some hock and pad protectors that they use for agility.
