Hi Regans mum here, Regan has taken up chasing cars not a good idea I am recently out of two plaster's really don't want to have any more also I don't want any nasty vet's bills and I certainly don't want Regan to be injured and when he pulls you towards a moving car it is scary!!
silent
On a very busy road he seems ok have sat on the A5 in rush hour at a bus stop and he was chilled out just laying there, but on a quieter road where it is not constant traffic well to be honest he is a nightmare and I would really appreciate any advice on how to stop him, he is getting bigger and stronger so I need to have this under control asap.
bounce
Any help is appreciated....thanks.

PostSubject: Hi   Thu Jul 01, 2010 6:33 am

Are you using any sort of headcollar to control Regan?

I have used Pet Corrector very successfully with Duke to stop him chasing cats & motorbikes! Pet Corrector is just compressed air in a can that makes a loud noise. As soon as it distracts the dog then praise. Only took a couple of squirts on Duke to get the message across
Doesnt work on all dogs but worth a try?

Other methods can be distraction with food, if he is food orientated or toy. Stay at a distance he doesnt react to begin with then move closer to the problem until you can be next to the cars without a reaction. Lots of praise when he ignores the cars.

Hiya, Regans mum here thanks for those tips if not a stupid question where can i get one of those pet correctors from (ebay??)
as that sounds good. He is on a head collar now but that's quite a recent thing. Tried the food earlier today but couldn't get the attention
which is very unusual normally he will do any thing for food! Makes it difficult at the mom as working with just the one good hand
but will certainly give these ideas ago....thank u will keep you posted.

No such thing as a stupid question Very Happy

Pet Corrector is available from Pets at Home or maybe even your local petshop, mine sell it. It comes in a red can, I just pop mine in my bumbag when I go for a walk so its ready to hand

A lot of dogs that are food orientated indoors arent bothered by it outside. My Duke is like that as well when he's distracted, I've tried fresh chicken & livercake outside & he didnt even sniff it!

Depending on what headcollar you are using can make a difference as well especially if you've only got use of one hand. I have that problem too as I've got one dog in each hand lol!
Dogmatics are fantastic & I found give more control than ones such as halti or gentle leaders.

Let us know how you get on flower

Rather than payout for a can of 'Pet Corrector' (the small one is about £7 and the larger one £11), I go to my local computer shop and buy a can of compressed air MUCH cheaper! Works exactly the same!

Kays Tip of the day! Surprised)

I've tried all the headcollars on the market for my dogs. The best one I've used so far is the Dogmatic. I just had to buy a new one as Buddy outgrew his. He doesn't chase and walks on a normal collar and lead quite well but for certain things, I prefer using the headcollar.

Max is a cat chaser (despite us having 10 cats) and pulled me into the middle of the road not long after we adopted him. Thankfully it was at night and there was no traffic but I dread to think what would have happened if there had been. Scary!

I like Dogmatics because they don't ride up into the dog's eyes and the dog can't get out of them. They work a treat. All the dog can do if he does try to chase something is jump around (usually in a circle) and look silly Laughing

One of our local vets stocks them. I paid £19.99 last year for the leather one (price now £23.99) and £16.99 for Buddy's new one which is made of strong, padded webbing. It looks smart on him too as it matches his lovely coat Very Happy
